Applying Nail Art Powder: Step-by-Step Guide

Create a mirror shine, a soft pearl glow or an aurora finish with a carefully applied nail art powder. This Bojun guide explains the rub-on application process and the details to check when testing a new powder.

This guide covers powders designed for rub-on application. Magnetic pigments, acrylic powders and loose glitters may require different methods. Always follow the instructions for your selected powder and gel system.

What You’ll Need

  • A rub-on chrome, pearl or aurora powder
  • Base coat and your chosen gel colour
  • A compatible no-wipe top coat or powder application gel
  • The curing lamp specified for your gel system
  • A sponge applicator and a soft dusting brush
  • A compatible finishing top coat

Step 1: Prepare Your Base

Prepare the nails and apply your base coat and gel colour according to the gel manufacturer’s instructions. Cure each layer as directed.

Choose your background colour before testing the powder. A sheer nude, white and black base can produce different appearances with the same effect powder. Use a practice tip to check your preferred combination.

Step 2: Create the Application Surface

Apply a smooth, even layer of a compatible no-wipe top coat or powder application gel.

Cure according to the instructions for that product and lamp. There is no single curing time suitable for every powder-and-gel combination. Do not shorten the specified cure simply to make the powder adhere.

Step 3: Rub On the Powder

Pick up a small amount of powder with a sponge applicator. Gently rub it across the nail, working over the centre, sidewalls and curved areas until the finish looks even.

Start with a light application and add a little more only where needed. Keep powder away from the surrounding skin and avoid creating airborne dust.

Step 4: Remove Loose Powder

Use a soft brush to remove excess powder around the nail and free edge. Inspect the surface under consistent lighting before sealing it.

If the finish looks patchy, check the application surface, product compatibility and curing instructions on a practice tip before continuing.

Step 5: Seal the Finish

Apply a compatible finishing top coat, covering the powdered surface and carefully sealing the free edge without touching the skin.

Cure for the full time specified by the top-coat manufacturer. Add another layer only if recommended for your application system.

Step 6: Check and Record Your Result

View the finished nail from several angles. For sample comparisons, record the powder code, base colour, gel products, lamp and application method.

Keep a labelled tip and a short video as references for future applications.
